A pearl, the June birthstone, is developed by a living creature named a mollusk, which can be a difficult shell invertebrate animal related to an oyster or mussel found in rivers and lakes. When a sea parasite finds its way and lodges itself inside the oyster it becomes an irritant for the mollusk. The mollusk, to soothe itself from this intruder, begins to generate a black substance referred to as conchiolin above which yet another matter named nacre is secreted. The continual secretion of this nacre is what at some point produces a pearl. It takes several years for this approach to generate a pearl large enough to use in jewelry.
